How to build your email list

So you hear everyone talking about email marketing and you know how important it is, but you don’t know where to start? Don’t stress! Building an email list from scratch can sound overwhelming, but we’ve covered some strategies to help you grow your email list and get results for your business. Creating an email list will give you the opportunity to share your story, promote your business and showcase your products, all while turning subscribers into paying customers.

Create a pop-up form

Although you may have an amazing product, as well as the perfect website, there’s a good chance people won’t subscribe unless you invite them to. Pop-up forms can be controversial but when used the right way, they can increase growth rate by up to 60%. They’re easy to add to your website and a convenient way for your visitors to share their contact information. Customise your form to appear on your site when people are most likely to interact with it, whether that be as soon as they land on a certain page or when the user is about to exit the page. Don’t forget to keep your form short and simple so it doesn’t deter people from signing up!

Offer valuable incentives

Let’s be honest, people won’t just hand over their emails to anyone. Privacy and security are a few of the reasons why, but people also won’t want to join your mailing list unless they see the value. Offering a discount or freebie is one of the easiest and quickest ways to get people to join your email list. To break through to your audience, make sure what your offering is genuinely tempting and something they would be willing to pay for. This could be resources such as ebooks, templates, cheat sheets or an online course. Offering a discount on your products or services is also a great way to attract attention to your email subscription as well as encourage an immediate purchase of your products or service.

Use social media

You may not have an email list (yet), but that doesn’t mean that you don’t have an already established network. Social media is the perfect platform to use those connections as your followers already enjoy your content, but they may not be subscribed to your email list. Pitching your newsletter on social media gives you the opportunity to turn them into email subscribers and customers. Include a link to your website in your social media profiles, this way followers can click on the link which will take them to a landing page with a pop-up. Alternatively, you could host a giveaway or provide a sneak peek of premium content the followers can only access after entering their email.

Run a contest

It’s in human nature that everyone wants to be a winner, that’s why contests are such a simple and popular way of growing your email list. The most important part of running a contest is the prize, but it doesn’t have to be the most extravagant prize that will cost you whole months wine allowance. It needs to be desirable and relevant to your audience because let’s face it, you want the same people who are attracted to your contest to be the same people you want as customers. Once you’ve established the contest and the prize, it’s time to start promoting! Be sure to consistently post about the contest over social media and place a pop-up on your website to grab visitors attention. You can even notify current email subscribers that they don’t miss out just because they’re already on your list. They can share and comment on the post for an extra chance to win.
